N2  - This paper examines the wealth effects of takeover announcement on target company shareholders for 227 sample companies, which received bids during 1998-2007. The results indicate that takeovers in India create wealth for the target companies' shareholders. Overall, they offer an opportunity to shareholders of target companies and general invetors to make profits both in the period before and after the announcement of the takeover bid by going long on the target company stocks
