The state of Andra Pradesh in India had two significant models of microfinance: the state run Self Help Groups and for profit microfinance institutions. Following allegations that th latter was following coercive recovery practices and pushing people into indebtedness, the state tried to clamp down on them. The case sensitizes the participants to the larger political economic environment in which the businesses operate and brings out the dilemma of the organizations when there is a clash between purpose and profits.
